Purpose

The environmental purpose is to ensure protection of groundwater resources, thereby protecting drinking water, and to conserve water resources.

Landowner Benefits

The landowners receives an on-site risk assessment of their farm operation and activities. Technical assistance is provided to implement practices that reduce groundwater risks. Financial assistance is provided for implementation of specific stewardship practices. Education and awareness of the risks associated with groundwater contamination and cost-effective solutions.

Description

The Michigan Groundwater Stewardship program provides technical assistance in the form of a Farm-A-Syst, Crop-A-Syst and Home-A-Syst assessment. This program promotes the practice of water testing of drinking water. The risk of groundwater contamination from nitrate fertilizer or pesticides is reduced through the usage of this program.

Water testing, clean sweep, hazardous waste disposal, well closures, and education to protect groundwater

Costs to Landowner

Some cost-share opportunities are available to the landowner to implement groundwater protection practices.
